Book Review By Daniel Staebler
Killing Me Softly by Nicci French

KILLING ME SOFTLY was published in 1999.

Alice and Adam experience the love at first sight syndrome. Alice, a scientist working for a pharmaceutical firm, abandons her boyfriend Jake, her friends and her previous life in order to live with Adam. She will little by little learn to understand Adam, an climber who took part in the Chungawat dramatic expedition, two years before.

Their sex life is violent, Adam being a S&M addict, but Alice is too obsessed by her boyfriend to notice that things could ever go wrong between them. Two months later, they're married. Alice starts then to remark strange things around them : they receive anonymous letters, Adam doesn't talk about his precedent girlfriends and his love for her is more an obsession than a real feeling. She begins to lie to him in order to make her own investigation about his past.

She'll discover that most of Adam's former girlfriends have disappeared or even died, like Françoise, a member of the Chungawat expedition that ended up with five casualties. Is it possible that Adam is a psycho who murders the women who abandon him ? It sounds completely ridiculous until the day she discovers that Adam is the author of certain of the anonymous letters they have received. And Adam starts to become suspicious, and more and more violent in bed.
