Denim and Lace by Patricia Rice

The Neely family cross the US, looking for their father and a valley he bought in California,. Samantha has become the "man" of the family, protecting her beautiful sisters from the men of the little mining town in which their search temporarily ends. But, in spite of his vow to keep his town female-free, the apparently misogynist and tyrannical leader of the town, Sloan Talbott, finds himself mightily attracted to the trouser-wearing "Sam", who saved his life from an assassin.

In exchange for help to find her missing father Sloan asks for two days in bed with Sam on a trip of discovery to San Francisco. Sloan, whose real identity he hides after a disastrous first marriage and the accidental death of his infant son, pretends to marry Sam in a fake ceremony with disastrous consequences but is forced to keep up the pretence when they return to the mining town.

Sloan tries to smoke out his assassin, retrieve Sam's father and discover the location of her valley and as he finds himself falling in love with her and accident deprives her of her memory and seems to give him another chance to recreate their love story without his earlier mistakes.
