Book Review By Jennifer Selk
The Old Brown Suitcase by Lillian Boraks-Nemetz

Slava, a teenage immigrant girl, moves to Canada from Poland after World War II. She struggles with life in a new country and is often haunted by her past. Fourteen year old Slava's difficulties include anti-Semitic racism in Canada, learning the English language, making friends, doing well in school, dealing with the death of loved ones, and navigating her young romances. Slava's story is complicated by her memories of the Nazis and war in Europe. She vividly remembers her history, which included starvation, illness, abandonment and the general destruction of the war.
