In London, she meets the Duke of MacArran, Harry Montgomery, who has been sent by his dictator of a mother to woo and marry the heiress. Claire, a great lover of scottish history, is fascinated by Harry, especially his scottish castle and fancies herself in love, so she agrees to marry him. Upon arriving at the scottish castle, Bramley, she finds an ill man, who is actually the her favorite author/explorer, Frank Baker, but in real life he is Vellie, the true Duke.
