| Celinaire's scheming guardian seeks to force her to marry the vile Phineas Smoot. But Leopold Wilde is really an alias for Kristoffe Wilde, who has been forced to assume the character of "Phineas Smoot" to protect himself from the French after he finished his spying career in the Napoleonic wars.
Falling in love with his wife and straining at being forced to live as a paraplegic, he resurrects Kristoffe to escort Leopold's wife in search of her shipwrecked uncle in Cornwall.
