Alanna: The First Adventure - Song of the Lioness 1 by Tamora Pierce

Being of noble heritage, Alanna of Trebond's future is set to be sent to a monastery and to be taught the ways of a lady. However, she has other plans. Adeptly switching roles with her twin brother Thom, she rides off to Corus, the capital city of Tortall, to King Roald's Castle to become a knight, while Thom goes to the monastery and studies to be a sorcerer. Disguised as a boy, she learns that the road to knighthood is not an easy one, for she has to master weapons, magic and proper conduct. She also grasps a better understanding of her magical gift.

It is through determination, dexterity and audacity that she soon gains the respect of the people around her. Making friends with the likes of Prince Jonathan, she also makes an enemy of his Uncle the Duke of Conté, who she believes is plotting evil against the Royal family.
