Dolores Price is a young girl who must cope with her parents' bad marriage, her mother's breakdown, and a move to her grandmother's house. Dolores is already unpopular at school, bullied by girls in her class and barely able to cope with her difficult grandmother. Her problems only increase when handsome Jack Spreight and his wife move into the apartment her grandmother rents. When Dolores faces even greater tragedy, she retreats into television watching and overeating. Her relationship with her grandmother and mother worsen as college entrance approaches. Afraid of the world and of what others think of her 257 lb. frame body, Dolores tries to get through bad relationships and worse depressions in any way she can – through television, through hard work, and even through lies. As Dolores comes to learn about herself and about the motives behind other peoples' cruelty, she finds that happiness comes from an unexpected source. | ||
