| Meyer presents a well documented account of the complete life of the Norwegian dramatist, Henrik Ibsen. He emphasizes the problems Ibsen had with the Norwegian theatre as well as the difficulties getting governmental support, his eventual move to Germany, where he spent a good deal of the most productive period of his life, and the general inadequacy of the renumeration he received for his work because of the lack of copyright. A lot of attention is payed to the productions of his various plays and the growth of his reputation. Meyer also mentions the dramatist's interest in younger women and his illegitimate son.
