Book Review By Jack Goodstein
Edith Wharton: A Biography by R.W.B. Lewis

Lewis' biography of the American novelist takes her from her childhood among the social elite of New York to her household in Lennox, Mass and to her expatriation in France for much of her life.
The book focuses on her unhappy marriage and eventual separation while still supporting her spendthrift husband, her relations with other men, her friendship with Henry James, and her medical work in the first World War. Lewis also spends a good deal of time talking about her novels as well.
