Mary Cassatt: A Life by Nancy Mowell Matthews

Impressionist painter Mary Cassatt was born in Western Pennsylvania but her family moved to Philadelphia when she was still very young. She studied painting and eventually settled in Paris where she found an atmosphere conducive to her art. In 1876 she was joined by the rest of her family including her elder sister Lydia who served as a model for many of her later paintings, until she died of Bright's Disease in 1882. Cassatt's paintings were very well recieved at exhibitions of Impressionism. She lived into the twenties.
