| The book begins in the fall of 1941 just prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor and America's entry into the second world war. Katie McNeill, a shy but beautiful clerk, who has been labeled an old maid by her coworkers at the University of Maryland, suddenly finds herself involved in a love triangle. She is pursued by a young student, Jimmy Garrett, who is a spoiled young man from a wealthy Maryland family. The other man in her life is Ron Miller, a handsome and intelligent Army officer, who is attending graduate school at the university. While he and Katie share an attraction for each other, he is leery of falling in love after being hurt by his ex-fiancée. As Ron and Katie build a friendship with one another, Jimmy becomes more and more insistent that she take their relationship to a level which she does not desire.
On Sunday, December 7, upon learning that Pearl Harbor has been attacked by the Japanese, Ron and Katie finally confess their love for one another. However, Jimmy is not the kind of man to take “no” for an answer. | ||
