William Carlos Williams was born in Rutherford, New Jersey in 1883. He attended the University of Pennsylvania where he studied medecine and became a physician, practicing in New Jersey where he spent most of his life. At college he met and became friends with Ezra Pound. He became interested in literature and began writing poetry and prose. His early work appeared in little literary magazines, but soon he was stealing time from his family and patients to write. In the fifties he was to be appointed Poetry Consultant to the Library of Congress, but the appointment was canceled when he was accused of being a Communist. He died in 1963.
