Little Karl is dying and afraid of death and his big brother, Jonathan, tells him the story of a wonderful place called Nangijala where people go after they die. Ironically, Jonathan dies while rescuing Karl from a burning house and so goes first. Some months later, the brothers are reunited in Nangijala, but all is not well: the tyrant Thengil is trying to extend his power to the peaceful valley where the brothers live.
