Book Review By David Fletcher
Rumsfeld by Midge Decter

More than just another politician, Donald Rumsfeld has been a renaissance man in service of the United States for the past 50+ years. It is easy to dismiss his conservative politics and think him one dimensional but that would miss the amazing variety of roles he has served in the past 6 decades.

He served as a Navy pilot and then a flight instructor after attending Princeton University, eventually achieving the rank of Captain. His initial exposure to Washington politics was as a Congressional assistant before himself being elected as a Representative from Illinois in 1962. He was relected to several terms until he resigned in 1969 to be a part of President Nixon's cabinet as Director of the OEO, moving on to NATO representative in 1973. He was the youngest Secretary of Defense when appointed in 1975 and returned to that post in 2001.

Outside of his public service with a dozen or more offices held through various presidential terms, he has been in leadership positions in the private sector with a number of companies. His combination of military training, political experience and business accumen may cause the reader to wonder why he is not currently sitting in the White House. Marge Decter has authored a detailed and thorough book about a tireless and intelligent public servant.
