The Queen of Hearts by Michelle Martin

Sparks fly when Lord Simon Cartwright first meets Lady Samantha Adamson, and subsequent meetings only make their animosity greater. The stuffy lord can not understand how any lady can behave with such utter insensibility to propriety and common sense as he does, and she can barely restrain herself whenever the arrogant and stuffy lord begins to berate her for her behaviour.

His sister, however, soon befriends Samantha and is happy to sponsor Sam's lovely young ward for her coming out in society. Before long, Sam is meddling in everyone's affairs and making matches left and right, and Simon frequently finds himself rescuing her from all kinds of social embarrassments. As the two begin to understand each other better, Simon loses some of his stuffiness and Sam learns to control her temper and act like a proper lady. Simon's long standing engagement to a prim and proper society lady prevents him from speaking out his growing love for her, but it doesn't stop his mother and a friend of Sam's from trying to make a match between the pair, who have finally come to something like friendship. From friendship, there is only a short journey to love, but there is still the matter of Simon's fiancée and Sam's young and troublesome wards…
