Susannah's Secret by Judy Christenberry

When Susannah turns up at Nicholas Danvers' country estate, and applies for a position as a governess, he does not believe her capable of managing his two young sons, but she proves to be very good with the children. Seeing how protective she is of her baby daughter and how she constantly refuses to go to town or be seen outside the estate, he comes to the conclusion she must be hiding from something or someone. As it turns out, he is right: she is in fear of her life from a man who wants to kill her and her daughter for her money. Susannah is a rich heiress and this man is her legal heir should her daughter die. When an attempt is made on her life, Susannah, who dearly loves Nicholas and his sons, decides she will not risk their lives by staying and runs away. As she is doing so, the assassin returns, and her attorney arrives with a solution to her problem.
