Book Review By David Fletcher
Being Direct: Making Advertising Pay by Lester Wunderman

Mr. Wunderman is the legendary marketing genius who rose from poverty in New York City during the Depression to pioneer much of the way direct advertising is done today. In 1956 he introduced the Columbia Records Music Club, at one time the world's largest direct marketing club. He created the insert card that falls out of magazines. In 1958 he created the marketing program for American Express Credit Card. His agency's ad campaign made Jackson and Perkins the largest producer of roses in the world.

Mr. Wunderman's story is impressive and full of the facts and figures that have made his advertising agency, WCJ, the world's nineteenth largest. With clients such as AT&T, Blockbuster, Du Pont, Ford, Kraft General Foods, Sears, Sony, Time Warner, Xerox and dozens of others around the globe he is able to give personal recollections of the projects he worked on that made him so successful.
