Secret Ways by Alistair MacLean

Michael Reynolds, a British Secret Service agent, illegally enters Communist Hungary to rescue the British scientist Dr. Jennings who has been kidnapped and held prisoner by the Communists. However, almost as soon as he arrives, Reynolds's cover is blown and he now has to accomplish his mission while every policeman in Hungary is actively looking to stop him. With the help of the Count (a Hungarian policeman who is against Communism), the mysterious Jansci and his daughter Julia, Reynolds just might have a chance.
