Dragonspell by Donita K. Paul

Kale, a village slave, discovers a magical dragon egg and is sent to The Hall to develop her egg-finding ability. Her journey is interrupted when she is attacked by monstrous grawligs. A rescue is made and Kale finds herself on another quest with two companions--a friendly, funny doneel and a begrudging emerlindian.

Kale must rescue a rare Meech dragon egg from evil wizard Risto before he uses it to create an aberrant race. But her mission is interrupted by danger and adventure. Kale must develop her abilities on the run as she races to save the egg and help her friends along the way.
