The Trouble with Magic by Patricia Rice

The Malcolm women, throughout their history, have all been gifted with supernatural powers. Felicity Malcolm Childe has the gift of experiencing visions through touch. Though all Malcolm women feel that their gifts are blessings, Felicity believes that hers is a curse, for every time she touches a suitor, she is gifted with agonizing images of their own secrets. Therefore, Felicity's last hope is to venture to Scotland in search of an ancient book of spells that will allow her to dispose of her gift with handsome inventor Ewen Ives as her escort.

As Felicity gets to know Ewen, she realizes that she can touch him without being gifted with a painful image. Felicity and Ewen, already attracted to eachother from the beginning, begin to explore the facets of Felicity's gift. The two begin to fall in love, but Ewen, who is broke, feels that a future with Felicity will be impossible until he is able to support her. Ewen lost his money because of the damage that one of his inventions caused, and he investigates the probability that it might not have been his fault. Meanwhile Felicity, still desperate to extinguish her gift, uses her ability to see one's thoughts to help Ewen in his investigation of his faulty invention and discovers that her gift might not be a curse after all.
