Book Review By David Loftus
Sherlock in Love by Sena Jeter Naslund

In 1922, two years after the death of Holmes, Watson decides to write a definitive biography of his friend. Immediately, however, several acquaintances and mysterious figures try to discourage him from investigating the past. Attention eventually focuses on the spring and summer of 1886, when Holmes and Watson met an accomplished concert violinist named Victor Sigerson, who asks the detective to test the authenticity of a valuable instrument, gives him a lesson or two, and proves to be an accomplished magician and escape artist. For some reason, Sigerson's fortunes become tied up with mad Bavarian King Ludwig II, and our dynamic British duo pursues both to the continent, where various European powers are seeking to imprison or kill the spendthrift and light-headed monarch. Sigerson obviously has some involvement with Holmes, however, as well as some secrets Watson will not divine until 36 years have passed.
