Magician's Ward by Patricia C. Wrede

Magician's Ward is the sequel to Mairelon the Magician. The central character is still Kim, the street thief Mairelon picked up in the first book, although Kim is no longer a street thief. At the end of Mairelon the Magician, it was discovered that Kim has the potential to become a magician. Mairelon takes her as his ward, and she begins her apprenticeship, which, to her dismay, involves being introduced to London Society and dealing with Mairelon's annoying live-in aunt. But things get more exciting before long. An intruder breaks into Mairelon's house, and a sequence of clues leads Kim and Mairelon to believe that he is a dangerous individual who is attempting to steal the magic of others, eventually including Mairelon's.
