Secret of the Missing Footprint by Phyllis A. Whitney

12 year old Marcie Sawyer is left in the care of her aunt and uncle while her parents travel in Europe for six to ten months. She feels abandoned and is very bitter not only toward her parents, but toward her aunt and uncle too.

Soon after her arrival at her aunt and uncle's home, Marcie meets a neighbor her own age, Timothy Rainbow. He is a troubled boy who struggles with anger and an inclination for feeling sorry for himself. In spite of his abrasiveness, he and Marcie strike up a friendship. He knows his way around the area woods and the old quarry which contains prehistoric rock specimens the he likes to collect.

Marcie's uncle also collects rocks, and when his prize “raindrop rock” is stolen Marcie and Timothy decide they will take on the case and solve the crime. In the process, however, Marcie is led into troubles of her own. In the process of unraveling the mystery, and coming to terms with her own problems, she begins to develop a more mature attitude about life. As she begins to focus more on the things she should be grateful for, she begins to set a good example for Timothy. More important than solving the mystery of missing rocks, these two characters undergo a good amount of personal growth.
