The Young Hamilton: A Biography by James Thomas Flexner

Flexner deals with the early life of the man who was to go on to be the first Secretary of the Treasury under George Washington. Alexander Hamilton was born on the island of St. Croix. He was an illegitimate child. His mother, who had left her first husband, was unable to marry his father. Hamilton was sent to America to study at the university through a charitable fund set up by local gentry impressed with his ambition and intelligence. He studied law at Kings College in New York, where he became involved in the revolutionary fervor, taking an active part in learning the art of war. Eventually he became an aide to General Washington.
