As the book opens the White House grounds are overrun by terrorists during a State Dinner. The President, trying to escape with a false identity, is caught in a huge blast that has kills everyone else. He wakes up in a hospital with a face that has had extensive plastic surgery, and no memory. He is presumed dead. The Speaker of the House, an ultra right-wing extremist becomes President.
