Book Review By Jack Goodstein
Byron: A Biography by Leslie Marchand

Marchand's comprehensive biography covers the entire span of the poet's life: his childhood at Newstead, his abortive marriage, his burst of fame after the publication of "Childe Harold," his return to England as a literary lion, his later life in Italy, and his eventual death fighting for Greek independence. A good part of the book is concerned with Byron's relations with the opposite sex, especially his affairs with Lady Caroline Lamb, his half sister Augusta and Teresa Guiccioli, his Italian mistress. Marchand also provides complete documentation about the poet's major and minor poetry.
