The Sherbrooke Bride by Catherine Coulter

In this action packed romance, Douglas Sherbrooke, tired of the constant harrassment to marry from his family to achieve an heir for his earldom, decides to marry a woman he was attracted to three years before while he was still in the military. As he gets ready to depart and marry his bride, he is informed of an important mission he must complete. While Douglas leaves on his mission, he sends his cousin, Tony, as his proxy to marry. Tony instantly falls for his intended bride, Melissande, and ends up running away with her and marrying her himself.
Alexandra Chambers, Melissande's little sister, has secretly loved Douglas since he visited years before, and since her family had desperately needed the money from the intended marriage, steps in a marries Douglas through Tony's proxy. When Douglas comes home and learns of the deceit, he is furious and vows to annul the marriage.
Alexandra tries to seduce Douglas into not annulling the marriage, but to her mortification, he rejects her. Deciding she is fed up with the situation, Alex decides to flee, which always seems to end in disaster. As Douglas and Alex are thrown into situations together, the bond between them begins to grow, especially since Douglas finds himself desiring Alex with an urgent intensity. They combat the elements throughout the story that keep apart, from Douglas's want for Melissande to a vengeful spy who declares that Douglas has wronged him.
