Jim Qwilleran has been promoted to food critic for the The Daily Fluxion, just as he is going on a diet. He is invited to a Gourmet Club dinner at Maus House, an apartment building which rents to artists and people in the food industry. He ends up as one of the lodgers, and is flung into a society of assorted eccentrics. Among the other inhabitants are potters Joy and Dan Graham. Joy happens to be Qwill's old girlfriend, and when she confides in him that she's getting a divorce, he generously lends her some money so she can hire a lawyer. The next morning Joy has disappeared, and soon the houseboy, William, has disappeared as well. Qwill suspects foul play, but how can he prove it? The solution is provided by Koko, the clever cat, and a book about the history of pottery.
