Michael Douglas plays the president of the United States Alan Shephard. His former wife has died of cancer; he's now ready for female companionship. He meets Sydney Allen Wade, a political activist and journalist, fighting for environmental policy change. He is enchanted by her and actively pursues her. Unfortunately the press corps won't let him alone and try to make his personal relationship fodder for the next election campaign.
