Enchantress from the Stars by Sylvia Engdahl

New hardcover edition of 1971 Newbery Honor book, published by Walker, 2001. ISBN 0802787649.
To Georyn, the woodcutter's son hoping to rid his world of a fearsome dragon, the mysterious girl Elana is an enchantress with magical powers. To Jarel, junior medical officer of an interstellar expedition planning to colonize Georyn's world, she is even less comprehensible. But in reality, Elana is just an inexperienced student who has involved herself in her very advanced civilization's mission to save the planet from takeover. The people of that civilization know that both Georyn's species and Jarel's will someday become their equals--if each is allowed to mature on its own, without interference. But how can they prevent the invasion of the planet without interfering? It will ultimately require risk and sacrifice on the part of all three young people, who will triumph only through the power of faith and love.
