Book Review By Danell Leblanc
The Impetuous Duchess by Barbara Carland

Jacobina ran away from home. Her father has arranged her marriage to Lord Dornach against her wishes. Even though she finds him old and dull, her father insists he will announce their engagement. Jacobina decides the only option left is to run away to live with her Aunt in Nice.

While still in Scotland Jacobina's carriage has trouble and she must rely on the kindness of the Duke of Westminster for a ride. She appeals to his sense of duty by pretending to be an eldery woman, and he complies by giving her a ride in his carriage. He quickly discovers her ruse. Unfortunately they experience another crisis with his carriage and are taken to a nearby estate. Once there she resorts to deception again to explain her being unchaperoned in the Duke's coach. While their host saw through the ruse, she acquainted them with a old Scottish law making anyone who uttered a declaration of marriage before witnesses legally wed.

What is Jacobina to do, she ran away from one marriage to find herself intangled in another. The only thing the Duke knows about Jacobina it that she appears to be a mindless little fool. The Duke decided that they best continue her journey to France together, and hopefully time will sort everything out. Once in France they are caught up in the renewal of hostilities between France and England.
