Book Review By David Loftus
The Boggart and the Monster by Susan Cooper

Two years have passed since the Volnik family inadvertantly took a boggart -- a magical and mischievous spirit -- home to Toronto and then returned it to Scotland. Now the family has gone to Scotland for a visit so Emily and Jessup can spend some time with the new owner of the island Castle Keep they inherited then sold to him, Mr. Macanochie. During a camping trip to Loch Ness, the kids and the retired lawyer catch sight of the legendary monster, who is being hunted by an American scientist with the latest research technologies. The children gradually realize the aquatic giant is a relation of their own boggart, a similar magical spirit that got trapped in its monster shape after its own castle home was destroyed in a war several centuries back. With the help of the kids, Castle Keep's boggart tries to figure out how to teach its cousin to regain its fluid and mischievous ways, changing shape from monster to seal to airy wraith, before the scientists and journalists descend on it.
