Lost by Gregory Maguire

American novelist Winnifred Rudge travels to London to stay with a step cousin and do research for her new novel. She arrives to find that the cousin has disappeared, his apartment is being renovated, and the renovations are being hampered by what seems to be a ghost.   Winnifred tries to find out what happened to her cousin and what is causing the strange events in the apartment, while at the same time trying to work on her new novel. When her cousin reappears, we discover that he has been trying to avoid her. There had been a crisis in their relationship during a trip to Romania. She had planned on adopting a baby, but when they reached the orphanage, they found the baby dead. During the trip she has also gotten sexually involved with her cousin. Winnifred is left with overwhelming feelings of guilt.
