Book Review By Jack Goodstein
On Eagle's Wings by Ezer Weizman

Ezer Weizman, nephew of the first president of Israel, was born in Tel Aviv in 1924, and spent his childhood in Haifa. As a youth he was enamoured with flying and had some minimal training. Hoping to be a pilot, he joined the RAF when WWII broke out, but the British wouldn't allow him to fly. After the war, he got involved in the Isreali underground, and eventually was sent to England for officer training.
The bulk of this autobiography deals with his struggles to build an Israeli air force, get up to date planes, and strengthen that air force's place in the overall military structure. He spends a good deal of time describing the various wars after the country's
independence was declared in 1948, focusing primarily on the role of the air force. Less space is given to his very short political career.
