The Woods Out Back - Dragonslayer 1 by R.A. Salvatore

Gary Leger is a young man bored by a life in a factory until he is transported to a medeval world by a sly leprechan and a ring of dancing fairies. It is soon revealed that Gary has been brought to the land with a purpose; he is the chosen one to slay the dreaded dragon who wreaks havoc among the land and its people. Gary experiences a whole new world of adventures, battles, and new, somewhat strange friends. The sorceress, Cerdiwen makes things more complicated than originally planned. Not only does Gary have to cope with being thrown into a strange land and dangerous missions, but he also discovers the important role he plays by wearing the armour of the land's lost hero, Cedric.
