The Journal Editor Bill Jenkins assigns reluctant reporter Allison Wakefield to dig up skeletons on author Warren Jacob Covington. Allison does not want to be a muckraker, but knows that scandals are what keep the Journal afloat. She decides that she will do the investigative piece, but not destroy the impeccable reputation of the man although she knows Jenkins will not be pleased.

Allison tries her hand at being an undercover sleuth as she trails her target, who proves to be very elusive and attractive while on a book tour. She finally encounters Jake in Idlewood Lake, Michigan, and finds she wants him as much as he desires her. However, she digs up an incredible story about his work as an undercover State department operative, but exposing him could cause harm to many people besides being illegal.

The story line centers on the romance, but her assignment and his other occupation make a permanent relationship seem impossible.
