The Notorious Rake by Mary Balogh

Lady Mary Gregg is famous in Regency London for her intellectual
gatherings. She can't believe she's in the same party as Lord Edmond Waite, a notorious rake. But when she finds herself alone with him during a terrifying thunderstorm she practically begs him to comfort her by having sex. She dismisses that night as a result of her uncontrollable fear of lightning, but Lord Edmond determinedly pursues her. He realizes she is nothing like the women he usually takes as mistresses, and is shocked to find himself falling in love.

Gradually, Mary comes to realize there is more to the rake than she
thought and the care for nobody image he presents covers a scholarly sensitive man who has been hurt by tragedy in his past. Edmond's family blame him for the death of his brother and they have been estranged ever since.
