An Unlikely Duchess by Mary Balogh

Josephine Middleton's parents arrange for her marriage to the Duke of Mitford. Josephine or Jo is told the Duke is a tall, handsome rake and she just hates the idea, particularly his being tall, since she is very petite. She decides to go to her aunt's house to avoid the Duke's proposal. Mr. Porterhouse offers to escort her, but he arranges to have them stranded at an inn where he tries to force Jo to marry him.

Luckily, Jo is rescued from Porterhouse by Paul Villiers, who Jo does not realize is the Duke of Mitford. He is not about to tell her, either, since he is re-thinking his marriage plans. Paul has always taken his ducal duties seriously and this young woman is impulsive with no sense of propriety. Yet Paul falls into Jo's crazy plans to recover the jewelry Porterhouse stole from her and even agrees to pose as her husband. The farce continues as Jo's family start looking for her. Paul finds himself falling in love with the minx even as he tells himself she is the most unlikely duchess.
