Alexandra Purnell is found tied up in the bedroom of Edmund, Earl of Amberley. Even though this was a prank gone awry by Edmund's younger brother, Edmund must marry Alexandra to save her reputation. Alexandra does not want to marry. She has lived under the thumb of her overbearing father and wants her independence. She agrees to a temporary betrothal to Edmumd for the sake of his reputation as well as hers. But he agrees that after a suitable time, she can end it.

As they go through the motions of pretending they are to marry, Edmund finds himself falling in love. He must convince Alexandra not to end the betrothal.
