Dominic Raine, Lord Eden, is an officer in the battle of Waterloo. Ellen Simpson's husband is a fellow officer of Dominic's. When Ellen's husband is killed during Waterloo, she is devasted but continues to nurse the injured. Among the injured is Dominic. One night, when Dominic is out of his head with fever, he makes love to Ellen.

Ellen found passion in Dominic's arms, but cannot get over the feelings of guilt and betrayal of her deceased husband. Moreover, she is not high born like Dominic, so, there is no future for them. Dominic, however, is determined to win her over.
