This book is set in England after the armistace of World War I. Major Oscar Fairfax, a military policeman of high ranking, arrives in the small town of Caundon, to question its soldier inhabitants regarding a mysterious death on the battlefield. Of particular interest to Oscar is Jack Allerton who served with the dead soldier Billy. They were close mates, so much so that Billy asked Jack to marry his wife should he not return home from the war. After Billy's death, Jack did indeed marry Kitty as he harboured a great love for her. Suspecting foul play, Oscar delves into village secrets to find the truth....did Jack kill Billy as he suspects?
