The Imposter by Celeste Bradley

    Dalton Montmorency, Lord Etheridge, goes undercover for the liar's club, posing as the notorious cartoonist, Sir Thorogood, in an effort to find out who he really is. Clara Simpson, a widow who is actually the cartoonist, is offended when she meets the imposter at a ball and changes her usual quite personality to a loud obnoxious one in effort to get close to the imposter. Clara wishes to expose the imposter, but finds herself oddly attracted to the flamboyant man.
   Dalton, taking the role of a thief named Monty, decides to break into the home of Lord Wadsworth, a man who is depicted in most of the cartoons, but he does not realize the maid he runs into, Rose, is actually the Widow Simpson. Clara switches places with one of the house maids so she can find subjects to expose in her cartoon, but she does not realize that her cartoon has offended someone in high government and now she is a target for assassination.

Dalton and Clara do not recognize each other's alter ego due to the darkness, and the pair find they have feelings for each other, even though they cannot follow through with them. They decide on one night of passion and after the act, Dalton reveals his face, allowing Clara to recognize him.

    Clara flees as she recongnizes the danger she has put her family in, and when Dalton returns the next day to bring Rose to a safer environment, the real Rose identifies Clara to him. Angered at her deception, Dalton tracks her down, and even though she is considered a traitor, his feelings are too involved and decide help her. Together the two try to find out the mystery of why she is hunted at the same time they become involved in torrid love affair.
