At the end of the civil war, Olivia Chandler went to go meet her love Matthew Bowen at the train station, only to see him step off the train with a pregnant wife. Heartbroken, Olivia guards her emotions and throws herself into the family mill business.

Matthew regrets never receiving Olivia's letter telling him they could get married. And during the war found comfort in the arms of another resulting in his beautiful daughter. Yet things begin to change when Matthew's wife dies and he is left struggling with a farm and young daughter. Matthew discovers that he needs Olivia in his life.
