Book Review By Tony R. Rodriguez
The Disappearance and the Slow Awakening by Tony R. Rodriguez

As a fan of the poetic word and a student of the art, Desi Marquiso, the convoluted protagonist, is a deluded college student trying to do what's right, even though he finds himself continuously doing what's wrong. At the novel's open, Desi discovers himself locked inside a detox cell with acid swimming through his system. It's within this detox cell Desi finds time to reflect over the past forlorn day of regret that led him to jail. Here he's able to dissect his troubled life, drug-induced mistakes and moments of poetical bliss. Reminiscing in the detox cell, Desi talks about poems and mistakes he made.

Desi resides San Francisco's Visitacion Valley District, a neighborhood considered to be rough: police sirens and dogs bark continuously. Being the escapist that he his, Desi retreats from reality by fashioning poems about his troubles with his ex-girlfriend and his sad life in the ghetto. He perpetually writes maddening poems whenever inspiration strikes. When at school, Desi deals with his self-absorbed teacher, Professor Roubane, who seems to know less about poetry than Desi. Later he struggles with his job as a teller at a bank, customers complaining and adding stress to an already stressful person. His failed relationship with his ex-girlfriend, Elena Marie, adds more salt to the proverbial wound. Yet, his love for poetry and creative writing eventually pulls him through his poor judgment and slowly leads him back to the faith on which he was raised.
