Fyodor Dostoyevsky: A Writer's Life by Geir Kjetsaa

Dostoyevsky was born in 1821. In 1839 his father was murdered by his serfs because of his cruelty. By this time Dostoyevsky had moved to St. Petersburg with his brother and entered military engineering school. In 1842 he was commissioned a second lieutenant. Two years later he left the military and began writing “The Poor Folk.”

He became active in political dissent and was arrested in 1849 for his part in a conspiracy against the government. He was sentenced to death, but was reprieved at the last minute and sent as a convict to Siberia where he spent four years.

He married Maria Isaeva in 1857 and two years later was allowed to return to St. Petersburg and resume his writing. He spent many of his later years abroad writing and editing. His wife died in 1864, and he died in1881.
