Book Review By Jack Goodstein
Proof by David Auburn

Catherine is a troubled young woman who has been caring for her father, Robert, a brilliant but mentally unstable mathematician who has recently died. Highly emotional, Catherine is also worried about her own mental health. For instance she finds herself talking often to her deceased father.

A former student of her father's comes to examine her father's papers hoping to find valuable material in his notebooks. Over the weekend that he is there a romance blossoms. He also finds a notebook that contains a very important mathematical discovery. The question of whose work is in the notebook is raised. Catherine claims it is her notebook. It is clear that Catherine has inherited her father's mathematical genius. Her problem is that she is unsure if she has also inherited his madness as well.
