"Go Ask Alice" is a diary of a teenage middle-class girl. She unknowingly does with LSD at a party. This begins her struggle with drugs. Alice is an anonymous character and the most we know about her is that she is white, middle-class teenager who struggles to fit in at school and to live up to her parents expectations. The book covers roughly two years of her life, beginning just after she turns fifteen and ending after her 17th birthday. Alice experiments with drugs such as LSD and marijuana. She becomes hooked and feels she can no longer survive at home, she just needs to get out.
Alice and a friend runaway to start their own jewelry shop. Although it is a success, it becomes more of a college hang out than a real store. After closing the shop's doors, Alice and her friend fall in to a 'bad crowd' wherein she gets raped and taken advantage of. Alice returns home after not being able to be alone on the road anymore and tries to go back to school. There she is treated as an outcast and has trouble making friends. Her old friends all view her as a tattle tale. Alice needs help refocusing her life and she tries to find that with new friends and her family. | ||
