Book Review By Jack Goodstein
Abe Lincoln In Illinois by Robert Sherwood

Sherwood's play chronicles twelve scenes in the life of Abe Lincoln from a storekeeper to President-elect. He is tutored in grammar and rhetoric by Mentor Graham, runs for State Assembly. He falls in love with Anne Rutledge, and after her death is introduced to Mary Todd who gets him to propose marriage.

Influenced by Mary and his law partner, he enters politics seriously. He has a series of debates against Stephen Douglas, and is elected President. He vows to go on to face his new responsibilities without betraying his lofty ideals.
