An entire family of people are murdered in their sleep, and CD Grimes is called to investigate in his role as state grand jury marshal. He finds the dead are truly despicable. No one in the rural area cares that they are dead.
CD meets a variety of characters, such as the gay man who everyone likes. He certainly has motive - but he was with two bikers at the time, and they verify his alibi. Can they be trusted? A woman who is a blues singer and her husband had motive - but so does everyone else. The Vietnamese who run the Circle K, the biker chick - but everytime CD asks questions, the subject gets changed. Pack, a suspect, is attacked and almost killed. Did he know too much about druggies or that family's killer? A local prostitute was used in some kind of blackmail/badger game scheme by one of that family, and CD investigates to find she is hiding from a gangster in Miami she was married to - then the gangster is hit. CD solves both of those, but gets nowhere on his own case. This is a little rural town, and these people are open and honest. If they know anything, they will give a non-commital answer to his questions and change the subject. | ||
