Book Review By Angelica Maria Moreno Dominguez
Azucena by Leocadia Flores

Azucena is a poor village girl who sneaks out of the house to go to the rodeo, where she has her heart stolen by a macho bull-rider who takes her with him to his village, where they copulate passionately until he eventually rejects her, by means of increasingly violence. When he breaks a ceramic pot over her head, deeply wounding her, she is distraught in blinded anguish and leaves him for the city.

Working as a waitress, she attracts a well-off mild-mannered and sincere college student named Manolo, who falls for her. They become lovers and the boy becomes deeply infatuated with her. Manolo tries to win her love by offering Azucena a comfortable life, and an escape from poverty. When Manolo asks her to marry him, inviting her to join his family, she puts him off again, then she is escaping to her dreams, and memories of her drunken dad; and the love of her life, the man she loves. She suddenly commits an insane criminal act ending up in jail awaiting charges and a court hearing. Manolo's passion for her torments as she refuses to see him.

She would only have Arturo, her bull-rider, her first lover, only he would understand her. The meeting of Azucena and Arturo in the visiting room at the jailhouse is the amazing climax of this novela in 240 scenes.
